Weekends in Bar Harbor I love spending summer weekends in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.  Ironically, I go there for two reasons: to enjoy the simple pleasures of Maine and to relish in the most pristine pavement in the United States.  That's right, Acadia offers some of the best cycling surfaces I have ever been able to ride.
Bubble Maineia's Grand non-Opening
On Monday, July 5th, I approached the doors of Bubble Maineia's new store (15 Temple Street, Portland, ME); to my dismay I found them locked.  Confused, I yanked on the door a few times as I re-checked the business hours.  The lights were on, the "open" sign was bright blue and red, and a young kid inside scurried away while on his cell phone.   Perhaps it is unfair to write about Bubble Maineia's new Dessert and Noodle Bar without first tasting the food, but I have no choice since I could not get in.
Boda Thai Kitchen Bar Boda Kitchen Bar (645 Congress Street, Portland, ME) is located on the corner of State and Congress. It opened three months ago as a "Kitchen - Bar" concept similar to Nosh: small plates, good food, and plenty of drink choices.  The first time I ate there was one week ago Saturday, and the food was impressive enough to get me through the door the next night.  Perhaps my weakness for "tapas" style restaurants is to blame, but Boda is another gem in the Old Port.

The Grill Room

the_Grill_RoomThe Grill Room (located at 84 Exchange Street Portland) is a meat house not to be missed.  My last visit, also my first, was just a few weeks ago.  During that food binge I decided to visit all three of Harding Lee Smith's restaurants in Portland.

Food was plentiful and delicious. Perhaps slightly too big of portions for a regular dinner night out, but portion control is my issue not theirs.  We started our evening at the bar with raw Oysters and fried Sweetbreads along with drinks. The bar service was - average - at best, with barkeeps mostly single tasking, leaving customers waiting to put in their orders.  The drinks, on the other hand, were creative and potent.  The bar was loud and vibrant, with all the patrons looking comfortable and content.   The oysters were a miniature taste into The Grand Central Oyster Bar; at least in principle.  The actual choice of oysters was rather disappointing, largely because they varied in level of brine and not much else.  However, I enjoyed the experience never the less.

Gluttony overcame us when it came to placing our dinner order.  We settled on the 35 oz hunk of cow - no longer a steak at those proportions - combined with veggies, fries, brussel sprouts, and bread.  In retrospect, I do not believe I can ever order that much food again, but combined with a bottle of wine it sure made for a fun night.   The meat, ordered rare, was exactly as promised: cool in the middle. I've always been a fan of a rare - a really rare - steak, although my tastes have been changing.  I've come to realize that at 35oz, it's necessary to cook that meat a little more: definitely above medium.  Small pieces of meat are fun when rare, but when proportions change to the size of the Flintstones, the meat just needs to cook through.    I enjoyed it never the less.   The sides were equally gargantuan and delightful.

The staff was great and the atmosphere lively. I truly enjoyed the Grill Room and look forward to eating there again.

This is a blog. That fact means nothing. It is not a peer-reviewed journal, a final archive of my writing, a sponsored publication, or the product of gatekeeping and editing. That does mean something…it means that while the ideas and thoughts are often vital and the product of a long gestational period, the writing itself is not. It is essentially as it came from the keyboard: spontaneous, unproofed, unrevised, and corrected afterward only when necessary to address mistakes that grossly effect the intent. Where such changes have been made they are explicitly noted… Click here for terms and conditions.
