Weekends in Bar Harbor I love spending summer weekends in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.  Ironically, I go there for two reasons: to enjoy the simple pleasures of Maine and to relish in the most pristine pavement in the United States.  That's right, Acadia offers some of the best cycling surfaces I have ever been able to ride.
Bubble Maineia's Grand non-Opening
On Monday, July 5th, I approached the doors of Bubble Maineia's new store (15 Temple Street, Portland, ME); to my dismay I found them locked.  Confused, I yanked on the door a few times as I re-checked the business hours.  The lights were on, the "open" sign was bright blue and red, and a young kid inside scurried away while on his cell phone.   Perhaps it is unfair to write about Bubble Maineia's new Dessert and Noodle Bar without first tasting the food, but I have no choice since I could not get in.
Boda Thai Kitchen Bar Boda Kitchen Bar (645 Congress Street, Portland, ME) is located on the corner of State and Congress. It opened three months ago as a "Kitchen - Bar" concept similar to Nosh: small plates, good food, and plenty of drink choices.  The first time I ate there was one week ago Saturday, and the food was impressive enough to get me through the door the next night.  Perhaps my weakness for "tapas" style restaurants is to blame, but Boda is another gem in the Old Port.

Maine Restaurant Week 2010 (Portland, Maine): My Short List

restaurantweekRestaurant Week 2010 (Maine Restaurant Week) is one of my favorite events in Portland. It is an opportunity to experience new restaurants, re-visit old ones, and experience those that I know well in a different way. In my eyes, the restaurants that do best are those that treat Restaurant Week in a special way and find ways to showcase their talents in menu items that are extraordinary. Maine Restaurant Week is a platform for raising awareness, generating business, and experimenting with dishes.  Hence, I try to look for places that offer menu choices that may not be available year round.

The previous Maine Restaurant Week blog entry was my view on places I know and maybe plan to visit.  Here, I want to showcase the places I am interested in.  I will update this article through February as I adjust my reservations and make more concrete plans.  The short list will get shorter.

Bar Lola Some of my readers have argued that - although my experience was valid - it is not representative of Bar Lola. Therefore, it is only fitting, that I experience it one more time during Maine Restaurant Week .  Let's see if Bar Lola can deliver on great value and wonderful food as so many foodies have stated.
Chance at redemption.

Cinque Terre Cinque Terre offers a wonderful menu year round.    Their Maine Restaurant Week  menu for Restaurant week is right up my alley: gnocchi with braised rabbit make me salivate.
Rare chance.

El Rayo Taqueria I've been harsh on El Rayo and I go there often.  Their Maine Restaurant Week menu sounds different, and that is a good enough reason for me. Curious.
**
Five Fifty-Five I love their food but avoid it for personal reasons;  I look forward to their Maine Restaurant Week menu.
Rare chance.
***
Ribollita I had a bad experience once and have not gone back since.   It's only fair I revisit during Maine Restaurant Week . Chance at redemption.

Back Bay Grill Never been, perhaps it is time. New Experience. *
bonobo [wood fire pizza] I've passed it many times on the way to Caiola's but never made it in. I heard it is great. New Experience. *****
Salt Exchange To be honest, I am not sure how I feel about Salt Exchange. For a while I thought they were going to go out of business - the place was empty each time I passed by. Lately it seems like it is attracting customers. New Experience. **

This is a blog. That fact means nothing. It is not a peer-reviewed journal, a final archive of my writing, a sponsored publication, or the product of gatekeeping and editing. That does mean something…it means that while the ideas and thoughts are often vital and the product of a long gestational period, the writing itself is not. It is essentially as it came from the keyboard: spontaneous, unproofed, unrevised, and corrected afterward only when necessary to address mistakes that grossly effect the intent. Where such changes have been made they are explicitly noted… Click here for terms and conditions.
